Empowering of the poor is a byword of Scarboro Missions' charism; its meaning varies greatly according to the situation, sometimes on the big scale, sometimes very small. But in all cases, Scarboro's missionaries work to give people as children of God a sense of dignity that comes with more control over the economic and social factors determining their lives.
